Who's Your Hero - Matthew McConaughey
Matthew McConaughey gave a speech, after winning the Oscars, for his leading role in Dallas Buyers Club. He started off by congratulating the other nominees and his colleagues/coworkers. McConaughey states "There are three things that I need each day. One, I need something to look up to, another to look forward to, and another is someone to chase." Additionally, he thanked his father, and mother, for raising them to respect themselves, which made them be able to learn how to respect others. God also plays a significant role in his life and has influenced him. Expressing that god has shown him that "it's a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates." Adding, he quotes, "When you got God you got a friend and that friend is you," in the words of the late Charlie Laughton, an English actor.
Furthermore, he started explaining a story in his life when he was fifteen years old, and someone came and asked him who his hero was. He said that it would be him in 10 years, but when he reached the age of twenty-five, that same person came up to him and asked, 'Are you a hero?' 'Not even close,' McConaughey stated. After he states, "You see, every day, and every week, and every month, and every year of my life, my hero is always ten years away. I'm never going to be my hero. I'm not going to obtain that and that's fine with me because it keeps me with somebody to keep on chasing."
One can learn from this speech that McConaughey is resilient and strives for the best always. Specifically, the last quote mentioned, it explained the concept of when he reached a point in his life where he had already made some accomplishments, but he wasn't fully proud of his achievements. He still wanted to strive for more because when he was 15, he wanted to do more, when he reached 25, he still wanted to do more, and so on. Until now, when he finally reached his goal. An individual will learn that everyone should aim for the highest and when we reach a certain point, we shouldn't give up and start aiming for even higher. They should set goals, aspirations, and have people to look up to because these people will bring out the best in them and help them reach higher and higher.
